Scores on National Board written examinations are determined by summing the number of correct items. Because there is no penalty for guessing, candidates are advised to answer all items. For traditional multiple-choice items, only one response should be marked. If a single answer is required, responses with more than one response or blank responses (i.e., omitted item) will be counted as incorrect. For multiple response (MR) items, the indicated number of responses (two to four) should be marked. To receive full credit on an MR item (i.e., one point), the candidate must mark the complete set of correct responses; NO partial credit will be awarded.

The Part III Clinical Skills Examination (CSE®) is a performance test. In CSE®, candidates demonstrate their knowledge and ability while performing 19 skills in four examination stations. Examiners (both in-house and remote) evaluate each candidate on more than 300 performance items. Items are differentially weighted based on a combination of the overall skill weight and the item scoring weight. Regardless of the number of points assigned to an item, all items are graded on an absolute basis; that is, the candidate either receives full credit or no credit. For example, if a performance item is worth four points, a candidate will receive four points if it is performed correctly, or zero points if performed incorrectly or not at all.

Rating Scale for Item Criticality - Clinical Skills Examination

Description Explanation
Essential Essential for satisfactory care;
poor performance would result in deficient patient care

Very Important Very likely to affect the quality of patient care;
only extraordinary measures could compensate for poor performance

Important Likely to, but would not necessarily, affect the quality of patient care

Desirable Desirable activity, but would not necessarily affect the quality of patient care if done incorrectly, or not at all

Test items that are found upon post-exam review to be ambiguous or flawed are deleted from scoring by consensus of the corresponding examination council. Thus, the number of items scored in an examination may be fewer than the number of items administered.
